Photonic Devices for Flat Panel Displays: OEL and CNT-FE

Organic electroluminance (OEL): Our research on organic electroluminance (OEL) is focused to increase durability of EL device, which is largely related to the efficiency.  One of key problems is the balance of the electrical charge at the activation layer. We have investigated a way to improve the electrical charge balance by controlling mobilities of charge carriers, charge injection barrier, and carrier transport layer thickness.

Carbon Nanotube-Field Emission (CNT-FE): One of promising application of carbon nanotube is as a field emitter in the field emission flat panel display. However, there are number of obstacles in implementing the carbon nanotube field emitter into the flat panel display. These are uniformity and stability issues of electron emission properties from carbon nanotubes.   High current density and reaction of carbon nanotube tip to environmental gases induce nonuniform and unstable emission of electron from carbon nanotube tip. Based on the systematic studies on reactivity of carbon nanotube tip to environmental gases as a function of emission current density, we are investigating the way to achieve the high uniformity and high stability of the field emission.
