Dr. Cheng-Zhong Xu is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University and the Director of the Cloud and Internet Computing Laboratory (CIC). He is also the Director of Sun's Center of Excellence in Open Source Computing and Applications (OSCA). Professor Xu's main research interests lie in distributed, parallel, and wireless embedded computing systems, with an emphasis on resource management for system's performance, reliability, availability, power efficiency, and securtiy. He is an editor of a number of journals, including IEEE Trans. on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) and J. of Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC). Dr. Xu obtained a Ph.D degree in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong in 2003.

Dr. Xu is a recipient of "President's Awards for Excellence in Teaching" of Wayne State University in 2002 and "Career Development Chair Award" in 2003.

Research

As computer systems become more and more networked and complex, new foundations are needed for understanding and controlling their integral properties. Dr. Xu's research is dedicated to the investigation, establishment, and experimental evaluation of new theoretical foundations and system artifacts to significantly improve the systems performance, availability, security, and energy efficiency.


Teaching

Dr. Xu teaches graduate and undergraduate courses related to computer architecture, computer networks, and distributed and parallel computing. He has created new courses about Scalable and Secure Internet Services and Machine Learning for Computer Systems.

Dr. Xu serves in the editorial boards of a number of journals, including the two leading journals in his field: IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems and Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing . He also has participated in the organization of several conferences and workshops in his field.
